Why Plant Retinol Instead of Retinol
Retinol works. It also stings, flakes, and asks you to stay out of the sun for two weeks. That trade-off is why a lot of people start a retinol routine and quit it by week three.
HKH Plant Retinol Serum Capsules take a different route. Instead of straight retinol, we build the formula around Bakuchiol — a plant-derived retinol alternative — and pair it with a stable form of Vitamin C. Every dose is sealed in its own single-use capsule, so nothing oxidises between uses and nothing gets over-applied.
The result is a plant based retinol serum you can actually keep using. In SGS testing, participants saw a 32.95% reduction in wrinkle volume after 4 weeks, with a 0% irritation rate across the panel.
What Is Inside Each Capsule
Each of the 30 capsules in this jar contains one measured dose of serum. Twist the tip, squeeze, apply, done. No dropper, no guesswork, no wasted product on your fingers.
- Bakuchiol — the plant-based retinol alternative the whole formula is built around. It does the retinol job without the retinol sting, which is why this is a serum we can recommend to people who gave up on conventional retinol.
- Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate (VC-IP) — an oil-soluble, lipid-compatible form of Vitamin C, and the third ingredient on our label. Being oil-soluble is what lets it sit inside a capsule without oxidising. Vitamin C handles tone and brightness while bakuchiol handles texture and fine lines.
- Squalane and botanical oils — squalane plus jojoba, macadamia, baobab and borage seed oils. The carrier system: this is why the serum absorbs without leaving a film, and why it works across normal, dry and combination skin.
- Tocopheryl Retinoate — a retinol ester, the retinoid that does the heavy lifting alongside bakuchiol. Gentler than straight retinol, and more stable.
- Five-peptide blend — Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, Carnosine and Arginine/Lysine Polypeptide. These are the messengers that tell skin to rebuild its own structural proteins.
- Cistus Ladaniferus (Rock Rose) — the botanical this whole line is named after. Wild-harvested, included for its antioxidant content.
- Ceramide NP — reinforces the skin barrier so the actives can do their work without stripping it.
The formula contains no synthetic fragrance. Everything you can smell comes from the essential oils themselves — rose, sandalwood and grapefruit among them — all of which are named on the ingredient list. It is not a heavy cream and not a liquid dropper serum — it sits between the two, closer to a light oil.
How to Use Plant Retinol Capsules
- Cleanse and dry your face. Capsules go on clean skin.
- Twist the capsule tip and squeeze the serum into your fingertips.
- Press, do not rub. Work it over your face and neck in upward strokes. One capsule is more than enough for both.
- Follow with moisturiser if your skin is on the dry side. In the morning, use sunscreen.
How often should you use it? If you are new to retinol of any kind, start with one capsule every other night for the first two weeks, then move to nightly. Because the formula is bakuchiol-based rather than straight retinol, most people do not need a build-up period at all — but starting slow costs you nothing.
Can you use vitamin C and retinol together? Yes, and in this formula they are already together. That is the single biggest advantage of a single-dose capsule over two separate bottles: you cannot get the concentration ratio wrong, and you cannot forget the second step.
Who These Capsules Are For
- You have tried retinol and could not tolerate it. Redness, peeling, or a damaged skin barrier within the first two weeks — that is the most common reason people look for a plant based retinol alternative, and it is what this product is built for.
- You want an anti-aging serum that travels. 30 capsules weigh almost nothing, never leak, and are not a liquid you have to declare. Frequent flyers tend to keep a jar in the carry-on permanently.
- You are over 30 and just starting. This is a reasonable first anti-aging serum: one step, one dose, no layering rules to memorise.
- You want visible results you can check. The 4-week wrinkle data is published, not implied. Photograph your face on day one and compare on day 28.
Who should skip it: if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before starting any retinol-adjacent routine, including plant-based ones. If you are using a prescription retinoid, do not stack this on top of it.
What the SGS Test Found
We did not want to make another "gentle retinol" claim and leave it there. The formula went through third-party SGS testing, and the numbers are the whole reason this product exists:
- -32.95% wrinkle volume in 4 weeks
- 0% irritation rate across the test panel
Most retinol products can deliver one of those numbers. Almost none deliver both, because at effective concentrations straight retinol irritates. Switching the active to bakuchiol is what makes the second number possible without giving up the first.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is bakuchiol as good as retinol? In head-to-head studies, bakuchiol has shown comparable improvements in fine lines and wrinkles — the difference is in the irritation profile, where bakuchiol is clearly the gentler of the two. If you tolerate retinol fine, stay with retinol. If you do not, bakuchiol is not a downgrade.
How long until I see something? The 4-week figure above is a wrinkle-volume measurement, not a "glow" measurement. Expect texture first, tone second, fine lines last.
Do I need to use it at night only? Applying at night and using sunscreen in the morning is the safest routine, and it is what we recommend.
What is the shelf life of an unopened capsule? Sealed capsules keep far longer than a dropper bottle because there is no air exposure. Once you twist a capsule, use it in the same sitting.
How long does one jar last? 30 capsules. At one per night, that is a month.
